Summary: we left Brussels, Belgium early this morning and were on the road nearly all day, traveling about 670 km (419 miles) via coach (a.k.a. bus). Lots of pretty vistas and a few stops along the way:

- First in the tiny country of Luxembourg for a Sunday morning stroll,
market shopping, and walking the windy streets to take in the
architectural sights.
- Then back on the road for a couple more hours, cutting through France,
we made a stop for lunch just outside Strasbourg (driving along the
France/Germany border).
- Another afternoon stop was made an hour after entering Switzerland at Basel (home of Toblerone, apparently), over the River Rhine.
- We ended in Lucerne this evening.
Awesome moment: taking in the gorgeous Belgian, Luxembourgian(?),
French, and Swiss countryside! Or perhaps purchasing a Swiss Army Knife
IN Switzerland!? Just being here is pretty awesome right now.

Blooper: in our hour-long stop in Luxumbourg, Susan found a
pay toilet (most toilets are around .50 to 1 Euro (1€=$0.81 USD). She
was the only one in the bathroom using the toilet. As she exited the
stall to wash her hands, she began to walk out. The Gruff, Stout,
Restroom Attendant barked for her to close the stall door behind her as
she came out. But all in German! Susan turned, on a dime, closed the
door, and threw a thank you kiss to the attendant and smiled in return.
How EMBARRASSING it is to have forgotten to close the stall door behind
you after vacating the toilet!!?? Who knew? This Luxumbourgite(?) taught
us how to properly use the toilet. Oh, and another cultural
blooper of sorts is something I am just now realiying... a German
kezboard has the z and the y switched (among other differences, similar
to those of a Spanish kezboard.)

| In a Bistro-bar in Lucerne, having drinks on a revolving floor. |
Cheapest pleasure: having drinks after dinner on couches situated on a revolving floor around a bar in an old, chic, artsy movie theatre/eatery complex in Lucerne, Switzerland. An even cheaper pleasure would be nibbling on a Toblerone bar in bed after dinner. Swiss chocolate with honey and almond nougat.

So fun to read! I especially love the cheap pleasures! Kari Hammond

ReplyDeleteYour pictures are marvelous and make me laugh. You two seem to be having a fun time.
ReplyDeleteThe rotating room was cool:) How fun! Remember take B vitamins to keep your stamina up for all the sites/walking:) You guys look like your ripping through it:)
ReplyDelete... just drinking lots of water and, of course, coffees ....
DeleteAre you guys taking trains at all, or is the tour only via coach and boat?
ReplyDeleteMostly just coach and boat while on the tour (though we took a cable car ride on the funicular today, and that had a train portion going up the mountain!). But maybe after the tour, in Spain and Portugal, we might ride a train.
